Students as Authors: Empowering Students with Words, with Audience, and with Voice

In this session, participants will explore the merits of an authentic writers' workshop as an avenue for student access to language. Participants will engage in model lessons, discuss the merits of giving students choice in writing, examine student work, discuss the use of assessment tools to guide and assess the work, and explore the power of individual and group conferences in facilitating student growth. 

Martha Templeton is a writer and educator with twenty-nine years of experience. She has taught writers workshop as a classroom teacher, led professional learning sessions at the local and state levels, and has worked as a school effectiveness specialist and/or literacy coordinator in both Georgia and Hawaii. She currently teaches writers workshop in a sixth grade classroom in Rome, Georgia, where her passion for writing and her love for students are at the forefront of her work.

Free Child Care: The Gordon County Library is offering free registration for Saturday Morning Lego Time to GATESOL members' children during the session. Children of all ages are welcome to register and participate in Lego Time while their parent is in the GATESOL session. Both this GATESOL session and Lego Time begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m. on August 25th. Please include the names and ages of all children registering for Lego Time at the time of registration for this GATESOL session.
